Comedones are tiny bumps on the face that are either open (blackheads) or closed (whiteheads) and are a type of acne. If their appearance or texture bothers you, here’s a routine that will help smooth out your skin:
1. Cleanse with PanOxyl 4% in the AM. Lather on damp skin and then leave on for 1-2 minutes so that the active (benzoyl peroxide) has enough contact time with the skin to actually work.
2. Apply a salicylic acid (BHA) toner 3-4x/week in the AM. Salicylic acid is really effective at unclogging pores and reducing skin oils. Look for toners that contain up to 2% salicylic acid, or a combination of salicylic acid and AHAs, like glycolic acid, like the La Roche-Posay Effaclar Face Toner (this is a leave-on treatment and does not need to be rinsed off). Always follow with sunscreen.
3. Apply a pea-sized amount of adapalene 0.1% gel (like Differin) at night. Begin by using a few times per week and work your way up to nightly as tolerated. Adapalene is a retinoid & is probably the best OTC treatment for comedones and texture. Follow with a moisturizer.
